The CCC is only a concept at this time but Rotary, Los Amigos and the Ejido have been discussing the concept and how to implement it.
El CCC es sólo un concepto hoy en día, pero Rotary, Los Amigos y el Ejido han estado en conversaciones sobre el concepto y la forma de ponerlo en práctica.

Deborah Drew, one of our very active winter residents, teaches the class. The course they are taking is called Commercial Design Studio.
Deb Drew una de nuestros residentes de invierno muy activa con el grupo Los Amigos , ha tomado la iniciativa de la propuesta de crear este centro como proyecto para sus alumnos universitarios en un curso que se llama Estudio de Diseño Comercial

  1. Hola Folks, sadly this project has come to rest, but only for a short while. I will be assigning the Community Center to my next round of eager students mid-fall, so please stay tuned. I wanted to share with you all my students reflection statements. It was because of your support that they feel stronger about their choice in becoming interior designers. Please read and enjoy. Hasta Pronto!

…This project inspired me through the use of items that would otherwise be considered trash. Reduce, reuse, and recycle are very popular words right now, and yet most people only really skim the surface of what can be done to truly bring this idea to fruition. I am very excited about the design I have created and all of the things I have learned through the process. Most objects seem to have one use, but when you look beyond that there are so many opportunities just like this community center project. I am honored to be included in this project and have the opprotunity to work with the people of La Penita. I hope that our work will inspire them as much as it has insprired me. E. Davis

…Working on this project has been a great experience. Working with a community so far away at first seemed like a daunting task, but it proved to be enjoyable. The feedback and excitement of everyone involved kept the project fresh and uplifting. Helping this community was a rewarding experience that I am glad to have been a part of. K. Palmer

…This is the first experience most students have had with a collaborative working model; most professional environments require strong team skills, but very few chances to develop those exist in the school environment.

Individual strengths and weaknesses are balanced when fit to a team – progressive interaction between students – created very positive energy. Slacking wasn’t an option; no one wanted to be the weak link.

Allowing students to focus on one specific area led to so many more great ideas as research was concentrated in that area, providing more guidance about what would work and what wouldn’t.

Community boards fostered just that, a sense of community and connection with the residents of La Penita.

The concept of a community center offering local people, especially children, opportunities which do not exist at present is very inspiring. Sustainability is hugely important in all design and was the thread which wove the whole project together. Finding ways to use ‘trash’ was challenging, but how many times did we hear, “Hey, I know what I could do with this!”

I saw tremendous growth in the confidence of some students. The team approach led to natural opportunities for supportive feedback, instead of being discouraged, they went back and gave even more effort to improve their work. I think the end product will be the very best any of us has produced to date. This is really a unique group of students.

Thank you professor Deb and everyone who posted on the Jaltemba Jalapeno site!

…This project gave me a chance to work not only with other students to collaborate our designs, but to communicate with an actual client. These are both things that I have never been given the chance to do. It ws exciting to get responses from everyone to help me improve my design. This was a great project not only because of the communication but because of the program. I think that more people should be environmentally conscious so it was great to have a project where that was required. I learned a lot from this project, from Deb, my classmates, as well as the residents of La Penita. K.Bernard

…For this project I have learned a lot about working together as a team. This has really helped me build upon that skill, especially since this class I really have developed on seeing more into this career. A few complication was trying to get hold of some people but after a while it was reasonable responses given back in time. It was a great experience to be able to communicate with the townspeople and I really enjoyed listening to what they had for ideas and incorporating what they had with mine. It ws nice to be able to expand further in creating my own furniture and fixtures. This project was a nice change this studio class. J.Do

…I’ve been attending classes at the New Englad Institute of Art for three and a half years and must say that this is the first and only time that I’ve enjoyed working on a group project, heck any project for that matter. It’s also the first time that I have experienced students collaborating together and sacrificing time away from class and our personal lives to complete a final project that we all could be proud of. Although we all had a high stress level and heavy course load, we found laughter through it all while working on this project. The fact that we give up time on the weekend to come in to work on this project and no one complained showed that we were committed and was willing to go beyond the call of duty to get the job done.

I found a joy and pleasure in this project that restored my belief in my career choice. I was honestly at a stage of giving up on being an interior designer, but found a restored belief in my choice while working on the La Centro Comunitario Cultural Center. For the first time I was actually working on a real space that existed in the real world, this made the project even more exciting and enjoyable. Deb, I would lke to say thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share in the joy of this project and hope that the school can learm from our experience. We as interior design students need to experience what the design process is like in the real world, all of which includes the thought and opinions of a real client not just professors coming up with these pre-fabbed clients and spaces.

This project in a lot of ways changed my prospective on what it could be like to work in the real world of interior design. To everyone at the La Centro Comunitario Cultural Center, I would like to say thank you for allowing me to share in this experience. Your willingness to share this project with Deb and her students, including myself has given us an experience that we will remember for the rest of our lives. T.Watson

…That’s all for now folks…. Professor Deb

I really look forward to seeing Deb’s posting of the designs in about a week’s time. Best of luck to the students with their presentations!
