Left turn
The only safe way to make a left turn in Mexico is to make three right hand turns.
Yes that is a joke but seriously left hand turns probably total more foreign vehicles than any other single manoeuvre. The reason is that drivers in Mexico also use their left turn signal to indicate to the guy behind them that the road ahead is clear to pass.
DO NOT turn left from the main drag unless there is a clear indication that that is what is intended like a traffic sign and there is a median beside you that will prevent the guy behind you from T-boning you. Much better to go to some place where you can pull off to the right hand shoulder or a feeder road and make like you are crossing the highway rather than turning left off it.
If you decide to ignore this advise CHECK YOUR MIRROR. The guy behind you may be passing.
As advised by Romy Mora, Juez of Los Ayala
The police would like Americans and Canadians in Jaltemba Bay to know that the only place we can make a left hand turn, (from the center lane) off the highway is at the entrance to La Penita de Jaltemba, leading onto the Main Avenida… And we can make a left turn on the green arrow… Our habit of turning left off the highway from the inside lane, when the traffic is clear or simply on a green light without waiting for the green arrow… may cause an accidents, so to please be aware of the rules of the road in Mexico.
