How to install US International Keyboard for XP

The bottom right corner of your screen probably looks something like this depending on how your system is configured.

When finished it will

include the keyboard

symbol like this

If you already have the tiny keyboard icon continue anyway because the icon may already exist if you use your computer for other languages like French but the US international keyboard may still not be installed

click the Start button (green bottom left) and the run button (bottom of second column)

and you get here where you type intl.cpl in the box and click OK

Which gets you

Click the middle tab marked Languages which gets you this where you click the Details… button

to get this

(If you see “United States – International” as one of your key boards then Cancel both windows and go to the bottom of this page to select the international keyboard .)

click the keyboard line to hilite it and click the Add… button to get to here

check the Keyboard layout/IME: box and you see

click the little down arrow at the right to expand the options

Find the United States – International line.

Click on it. The expansion collapses and the box contains United States – International.

Click OK at the bottom of this window and you see that you have added a new keyboard called United States – International. Well done!

click OK and you get back to here

the keyboard icon we were trying to get should now be in the bottom right corner like this:

If it is there click OK and skip the next two steps.

If it isn’t there DON’T PANIC. We need to do one more thing

Click the Details… button again to get back to here

Click the Language Bar… button at the bottom in the Preferences section to get.

check the box beside Show additional Language bar icons in the taskbar and click OK. Now the keyboard icon should appear. Click OK on both of the windows you have open and you are almost done.

If you do not have a keyboard icon in the bottom right corner like this

reboot your system and if you still don’t have it VERY CAREFULLY try the whole procedure one more time. If that doesn’t work we apologize.

Selecting the International Keyboard

Now you need to learn to use the keyboard you have just installed. Click on the keyboard icon to get

click the Unite States – International line and click the keyboard icon again to see that it actually has changed to this

Click it again and you are ready to test. Go back to the previous page and continue there.
