Serape – Christmas 2010
|
Well, the park is busy, busy as usual. On Wednesday, Santa, Mrs. Claus and some elves went to the Senior Center in La Penita, with some treats for the seniors. We were entertained by skits, songs and pinatas. What fun we had!
Then, Thursday evening, the decorated Quads pulling the “sleigh” with Mr and Mrs Claus, elfs, and bags of toys, visited La Colonia. This evening, we will do the same in a different park of town, then enjoy our traditional festivities at the office with our Mexican friends and neighbours. Santa will visit, there will be singing and pinatas. FELIZ NAVIDAD!!
On Christmas Eve, and New Years Eve, Petra, the lady with breast cancer we are helping, is making Tamales and Atole to sell.
New Years Day Petra will have a Chilli Relleno dinner with her delicious chillis. This time she says she will have plates and cutlery and serve a full dinner. Watch for sign up sheet at the office.
HAMBURGER NIGHT WILL BE DECEMBER 29TH and….
FROM THE MAILBAG
Merry Christmas from Greta and Mike Farina.
We are looking to buddy with someone around the 5th of January to go from Yuma to La Penita. Thanks very much, Hola: Fred and I want to wish everyone in La Penita a Very Merry Christmas and a Healthy, Prosperous 2011.
After a very busy spring in an out of hospital due to the many side effects of the chemo we are finally Out of the woods. It was at times challenging, but we managed to get through it, most often with a Smile on our faces. What can I say about my Fred? He was my rock through it all. We have finally made it through the last hurdle as far as this cancer is concerned. As of Monday December 7th, my oncologist said it is all gone at this time. That does not preclude that it may’ Return, but we are not thinking that it will. We are positive that I will be of the 20% that survive This type of lung cancer. We wish to extend our heartfelt THANKS to each and every one of you that kept us in your prayers, Thoughts and thinking groups. We are convinced that it is the well wishes and prayers that helped Us to beat this cancer. Fall of 2011, up and ready to enjoy the community, the sun and time spent with our ‘winter family’. We look forward to reconnecting to our family in the fall, till then, stay safe and savor every day You are given. Hugz, Fred and Faye Hodson A message from the La Penita Senior Association
On Wednesday the “tercera edad” seniors got a super surprise from the La Penita trailer park. Mr and Mrs Claus showed up in these expertly fixed up quads with a sled. The seniors had a great time with Santa and all his elfs….also thanks to Dave and Anne (the only notb people that came to enjoy some time with us) and we hope to do this again next year and hope more notb will show…..thanks to Linda for putting the santas together for me…George
Linda I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing Santa, Mrs Santa, all the elfs and the biggest happiness to my older children. They love it even more than the kids do. I saw their faces filled with smiles and they felt like little children when they saw Mr and Mrs Santa………please thank them all….all the people at the senior center wish you and all at the trailer park a wonderfull holidays filled with health and happiness….thanks again………George

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (Mexican-Style)
Not a creature was stirring — Caramba! Que pasa?
Los niños were tucked away in their camas,
Some in long underwear, some in pijamas,
While hanging the stockings with mucho cuidado
In hopes that old Santa would feel obligado
To bring all children, both Buenos and malos,
A nice batch of dulces and other regalos.
Outside in the yard there arose such a grito
That I jumped to my feet like a frightened cabrito.
I ran to the window and looked out afuera,
And who in the world do you think that it era?
Saint Nick in a sleigh and a big red sombrero
Came dashing along like a crazy bombero.
And pulling his sleigh instead of venados
Were eight little burros approaching volados.
I watched as they came and this quaint little hombre
Was shouting and whistling and calling by nombre:
“Ay Pancho, ay Pepe, ay Cuco, ay Berto,
Ay Chato, ay Chopo, Macuco, y Nieto!”
Then standing erect with his hands on his pecho
He flew to the top of our very own techo.
With his round little belly like a bowl of jalea,
He struggled to squeeze down our old chiminea,
Then huffing and puffing at last in our sala,
With soot smeared all over his real suit de gala,
He filled all the stockings with lovely regalos –
For none of the niños had been very malos.
Then chuckling aloud, seeming muy contento,
He turned like a flash and was gone like the viento.
And I heard him exclaim, and this is verdad,
Merry Christmas to all, and Feliz Navidad!

Tickets are now available for Los Amigos de La Peñita’s Fiesta 2011. The event will be held on January 30 from 1:00 to 5:00. Thomas Bartlett has again generously agreed to make his internationally acclaimed estate – Hacienda de La Peñita – available for the event. Admission to what has become one of the highlights of Jaltemba Bay social season will require a donation of 750 pesos – unchanged from last year. Like last year, Los Amigos is looking to recruit special sponsors to underwrite the cost of the event so that every penny raised through these donations can be used to support the work of Los Amigos: our plastics recycling program, our beach beautification, our education initiatives and our scholarship program and our newest undertaking – the Jaltemba Economic Development Initiative (JEDI).
Since 2011 will mark the first year of Mexico’s third century, the Planning Committee has decided to make this year’s event an authentic Mexican Fiesta. ¡Olé! The extravaganza will include an open bar and hors d’oeuvres. There will be live music and dancing, as well as a live auction and silent auction, featuring a host of valuable items. And this year, we will be featuring a Chinese auction as well.
Tickets are now available for a donation of 750 pesos per person, so reserve your ticket now. Tickets are non-refundable and this is an adults only event.

1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Holiday spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they’re serving rum balls.
2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It’s rare.. You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It’s not as if you’re going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It’s a treat.. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It’s later than you think. It’s Christmas!
3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That’s the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.
4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they’re made with skim milk or whole milk. If it’s skim, pass. Why bother? It’s like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.
5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Holiday party is to eat other people’s food for free. Lots of it. Hello?
6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year’s. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you’ll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.
7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don’t budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They’re like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you’re never going to see them again.
8. Same for pies. Apple, Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don’t like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?
9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it’s loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.
10. One final tip: If you don’t feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven’t been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner. Remember this motto to live by:
“Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate and wine in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming “WOO HOO what a ride!”
Have a great holiday season!!
Merry Christmas !!!

| CALMNESS IN OUR LIVES I am passing this on to you because it definitely works, and we could all use a little more calmness in our lives. By following simple advice heard on the Dr. Phil show, you too can find inner peace. Dr Phil proclaimed, “The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started and have never finished.” So, I looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn’t finished, and before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of Bailey’s Irish Cream, a package of Oreos, the remainder of my old Prozac prescription, the rest of the cheesecake, some Doritos, a box of chocolates, and the last bit of the tequila. You have no idea how freaking good I feel right now. |
