Advertising Costs and Options

Advertising on this site is open to anyone who has an appropriate product or service of interest to our readers.

You can buy your advertising on line at the Jalapeño Bazar Store but you will probably want to discuss your options first. Prices for various options are listed below but we can also customize to your needs.  Half banner ads on the front page are only 800 pesos (US$59.00) for a full year.  So contact us at Sunwatts@gmail.com to discuss your best options.

Display advertisements:

These ads link to your website or your advertising page on the Jalapeño. They rotate randomly. To see that happen refresh your screen and you will see a different set of ads and order of ads at the right. Every ad has an equal chance to appear at the top of the list. You can double its frequency by paying 50% more.

Rates are for a full year.

There are five basic types of display ads:

Front page: 800 pesos (US$59) per year

These ads appear in the right hand column on all pages displayed except some advertising pages and the forum. They are right beside where you are reading but if that isn’t clear enough the big RED arrow also points at them.

On the forum: 1,400 pesos (US$100)

These ads appear below all posts.

and at the bottom of all pages displayed on the forum.

Only one ad appears in each location and they all compete randomly with each other.

Categorized Tabs: 1,800 to 2,600 pesos ($129 to $189)

This price includes two categories under the main tab. You can ask for a new category under the tab to be added that better categorizes your product at no extra cost.

The arrow shows the categorized tabs. In this example the user has hovered over the lodging tab and moved down to “featured” and over the “Playa Las Tortugas” If they click there they will get to the featured page shown further down. Try it yourself. The tabs are right above where you are reading.

If they click on the “General” tab they will get the lodging page listing all the advertisers who have decided to place their ad there.

Services – 2,000 pesos (US$139)

Lodging or Dining – 2,100 pesos (US$149)

Real Estate – 2,600 pesos (US$189.00)

If there is more than one ad in a section they rotate randomly so each ad has the same chance to appear first.

Website: 4,200 pesos (US$300)

If you have your own web site you probably do not need this but if you want a page that targets the readership of the Jalapeño before they go to your website or you want to improve your search engine profile this is a page where you could do that.

It is one page of your own inside the Jalapeño. i.e. the Jalapeño header is visible but no other advertising.

Includes a “front page” ad and a “categorized tabs” ad. Extra pages are 600 pesos.

Featured: 1,400 pesos (US$100)

A featured ad can be under any of the categorized tabs.  It looks like an article about your business. It is only available with one of the other products above. Notice that no competing advertising is located at the right hand side.

Community Directory

We can add your directory listing for 300 pesos but you can do it yourself for free. All folks who advertise on the Jalapeño are added to the directory free of charge. If we still haven’t got your entry in the directory you should remind us.

What is a column inch?

It is a bit strange to talk about inches on a screen because the screens on which the ad displays will vary greatly. The exact definition of a column inch in this context is 129 pixels. Or said another way the front page ad is one column inch 332 by 129 pixels and that costs 700 pesos. A categorized ad at 1.25 column inches would be approximately 640 x 162 pixels. You can pay extra to have your ad bigger.

Market pricing – how it works:

The ads are priced low to allow for the market to decide what they are actually worth. If the space you buy gets too crowded because of high demand you can increase the frequency / priority of your ad by paying more.

Your costs are the costs listed above but the market sets the cost per display for your ad. For example consider the right hand column where as of August 2010 we displayed 10 ads. They display about 50,000 times per month (600,000 per year). If there were only 10 advertisers your ad would appear on every page. The cost per display of your ad would be 700 divided by 600,000 or 0.0012 pesos. If advertisers decide the price of the ad is good value then they will buy the space more often. If 100 advertisers want that space your ad appears only a tenth as often so your cost per display is 0.012 pesos. Advertisers can increase the frequency of their ad’s appearance by paying an additional amount so the market really does decide what your ad will cost.

Inappropriate Advertising:

We reserve the right to suspend any link to an inappropriate website or service.  For example if your website gets infected with a Mal Ware virus or starts to advertise inappropriate services or contains pornography we must protect the ranking of our web site by suspending the link  to your site until it is repaired. We also do not link to sites that will in other ways diminish the site’s credibility. For that reason we cannot accept certain types of advertising.
