National heroes
Mexico’s History is a violent one to be sure. The last revolution (1910 to 1920) was a very long civil war from which the country is still recovering.
Revolutionary Personalities:
Emiliano Zapata 1879-1919: La Peñita’s main street is named for this hero of the revolution. His support for Francisco I. Madero against dictator Porfirio Diaz made possible the Revolution of 1910. The joint force of Zapata from the south and Pancho Villa from the North was too much for the dictator to resist. The alliances were not long lasting and the failure of the group to hold power threw the country into 9 years of civil war. Detailed biograph from: Wikipedia. Very old historic footage of Zapata’s victorious entry into Mexico City with Pancho Villa: Video
Francisco (Pancho) Villa 1878 – 1923: The street behind the rodeo ring bears his name. His detailed biography is in Wikipedia.
