The 2016 Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday) Catechism Procession was a day early this year.
There was a change in location for the procession as well as the time. Instead of starting at the highway and going down the avenida at 10 A.M. Sunday morning as in past years, it started at the Bridge of Life at 8 A.M. Saturday. There was a more adult procession Sunday afternoon. (see next story)
Shortly after dawn, Yolanda drove up to the puente colgante and attached palm branches to the railing. Victoria, our neighbor, swept the area at the bridge approach in preparation for the Catecismo De Los Niños procession to the Iglesia in the plaza.
The crowd of niños and adults began to gather at 8 A.M. A vendor sold palm branches for 10 pesos each from the back of a pick-up truck.
There were several intricately woven designs of palm fronds.
What a well behaved group of children and teens. In quiet, respectful fashion, they lined up, smallest at the front of the line.
The padre arrived and mingled with the crowd.
There was a short responsive reading. Note the Padre is wearing the red garment as is traditional for this occasion.
It seems that the hymn, Viva Cristo Rey is the favourite.
There was a sea of waving palm branches held high on the final refrains of the hymn.
The highlight of the procession was the arrival of the burro that would carry Jesus to lead the procession. The biblical reenactment of Jesus riding into Jerusalem is always a major part of this procession.
Even the Padre takes photos.
