After the renovation of the Guayabitos plaza vendors who used to sell their wares there on Mondays during the high tourist season were not allowed to return. Apparently the hotel association did not want the ware and tear and mess left behind by the market. Vendors are unhappy about that and also the people who attend seem unanimously in support of a return to the old location. Local politicians I spoke with made it pretty clear that it is unlikely to ever return.
The new location is behind the Oxxo in central Guayabitos.
The new location is not as lovely as the plaza by a long shot. Much of the area used is not paved. When I visited it last week there were a lot of vendors. They actually outnumbered the shoppers.
Teriyaki Time Restaurant is probably one of the businesses to gain the most from the new arrangement.
The new plaza is lovely but also very empty on this particular Monday.
On a brighter note the vendors in La Penita’s Thursday market will be returning to the plaza as soon as the renovations are signed off by the municipality.
