The second volunteer day at Las Ladrilleras kindergarten in the far northwest corner of La Peñita went well today.
"Come on you guys pullllll".
We managed to get the fence around 2 of three sides of the property with the help of an enthusiastic team. So with apologies to those who had to leave early here is to obligatory group photo:
We tugged and pulled.
(( Why so many pictures of the same thing? A couple of reasons: a lot of backs and bums get exposed when folks are working and in some shots not every one is pulling so we try to supply at least one photo where they are hard at it.))
This little guy was also right in there. He will be attending in a couple of years.
"Just a bit tighter please."
At time I wondered if we should be carrying extra insurance.
There will be another volunteer day in early February to completed the fence and plant trees. Watch for that on the forum.
We were honoured to have with us the President of the Citizen’s action Committee, Baltazar (black shirt), and their secretary, Rafa (stripes) shown here with our new president of the education committee, Saul.
I have tried for 4 years to get the CAC interested in Los Amigos. The new committee is also sending representatives to Los Amigos meetings and it looks like we will have our first joint effort as part of the Los Amigos’ fund raiser February 25th. That is just a rumour so far but too exciting to not share.
The media arrived just in time to take it all in
and conducted an on the spot interview with Carlos, past president of the Los Amigos education committee, for their video.
The video will be presented at the annual Rotary Dinner and Dance January 21st. If you don’t have tickets yet there are still a few available. Many of the projects of Los Amigos are partially funded by Rotary. On this project the bathrooms were funded by a grant from the Ladysmith, B.C. Rotary and a number of other Vancouver Island clubs. The majority of the funds for the fencing also came from a variety of Rotary sources. See the full list of supporters here.
One of the local farmers brought watermelons to share and the Norteños managed to ham it up a bit as a lead in to super bowl.
A couple of old time Fiesta T-shirts were definitely appropriate becasue that is where the majority of the approximately 300,000 pesos for this project came from.
Sure we got a bit dirty but it was well worth it.
The attendance of local parents was down because most of them work in the tourist trade and could not take the time off. They are always concerned about that but the education committee makes it very clear to its members that if they have the chance to work that is more important than the volunteer days. If you look at the group photo for the previous volunteer day you will see that they are a very active and enthusiastic group.
Why do we do it? So this little guy can attend a really good kinder.
If you need a reason to support your local charities think about how they all work together to make projects like this come together.
