The donation of a pair of bicycles results in a renovation project at Kindergarten Josepha Ortiz in La Peñita de Jaltemba, Nayarit.

When Rotarian Bill Wilkerson was asked to find someone in the community who really needed a couple of bicycles donated by Neil and Joan Brint Calgary, Alberta, Canada he inquired at one of our least advantaged kindergartens.

Recipients were located and the bicycles were donated.

On their visit to the kindergarten Bill and the Brints were struck by the condition of the borrowed building that houses the kindergarten. The gravel floor and unlit back room especially caught their attention.

Bill pulled together a group of donors to do a quick renovation while the children were on Christmas break. A local business owner supplied a crew who got an early start considering they had probably celebrated late the night before.

Bill inspected the progress Saturday morning

and later in the day some of the donors came by to check out the project.

By the end of Christmas day the new floor was almost complete.

The project continues with wiring and painting. The next greatest need is security on the front window and a front door that can be locked. Funding for that is still needed. If you would like to contribute to the project you can email Bill at wilkersoncasa@yahoo.com.  Bill asked me to mention that the generous donations of folks from the La Peñita trailer park plus some anonymous donors was instrumental in moving the project along.  You know who you are; thanks so much.

The Kindergarten is currently located in a borrowed house in Colonia El Campesino, one of La Peñita´s neighborhoods, and officially named Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez but the project has been dubbed the Las Rosas Project because that is where the original parent´s group had acquired land and that is where the final kindergarten is most likely to be built.

Spanish Lesson / Leccion de Inglés

el jardin de niños – the kindergarten – literally garden of children
el kinder – commonly used short form for a kindergarten
la colonia – the neighborhood not to be confused with one of La Peñita´s neighbourhoods which is referred to as La Colonia where the La Peñita trailer park is located. It´s full name is La Colonia Paraiso Escondido. And that is easy to confuse with the Colonia Paraiso which is located just south of Colonia Centro which includes the main shopping area.
